FA JIN

Fa Jin

This is one of the ultimate dreams of many martial artists., especially those train in the "internal" or "soft" aspect of Kung Fu. In some way, it is like a "barometer" of the level of achievement in mastering the Physical, Energy and Mental aspect in Kung Fu. It also show how much the Body and Mind is integrated. How the Mind can manifest through the Body. Many aspire and train very hard but without a good understanding of the Body and Mind, the process of assimilation, internalization and the "Inner Engineering"requirements.

There are many Kung Fu masters teaching how, but comparatively not many of their students  achieve it. Most of them project the idea that it takes long, long time with lots of hard training and may need to do Zhan Zhuang for hours. Have seen many senior masters who have been teaching for 30-40 years and yet ironically cannot manifest it themselves. These make me wonder, are their method working, or are they taught the right way in the first place?

According to Wikipedia, "Fa Jin" means to issue or discharge power explosively or refining the explosive power..... With this definition in mind, a boxer is also capable of the same. However, in the context of internal martial artists, this process commonly seen as a set of methods capable of generating the energy further refined and focused through many more muscle groups (particularly in the waist and torso - the dantian ) allowing feats with far less visual physical expression such as the one-inch punch (chun jin).

Jin described the ability to generate force. Jin and Qi are inherently combined concepts in internal martial arts. to generate the "Fa Jin", according to the traditional explanation, it is necessary to transfer Qi from Dantian towards the limb or body part that will perform the technique with explosive force......

In terms of physics, it is a simple matter of body alignment, coordination, and torque. The body begins in a relaxed physical state, which is then quickly accelerated like a "whip" in a coordinated movement of the entire body. Generally, the strike is immediately retracted after contact to shorten impact time, which theoretically increases the impulse of the strike.

A main principle in creating "Fa Jin", is using your Dantian. The Dantian is thought to be the storehouse of your energy. One technique described by Master  Jianqiao for developing Fa Jin is by breathing into your lower abdomen (dantian) and creating a pressure. When you strike and squeeze your lower abdomen tight so that the core becomes compact, unifying the torso, this actively engages more of the muscle fibers to generate more force.

Sao Lim Wing Chun Lotus Form encompass all these aspect of the above factors. Progressively, trainees are lead into each aspect of the Physical Body, the Energy Body and Mental Body, corresponding to the Jing, Qi, Shen in internal Kung Fu's terminology. Dap Sao Flow provides the practitioners a platform to assimilate, to judge distancing, to have a sense of positioning and instinctive footwork, so that they are able to execute "Fa Jin" at the opportune timing and conditions.
