Wing Chun in the 2000s of today world

Wing Chun is one of the most popular Kung Fu style in the world today.....

Wing Chun's origin was from Southern China, believed to be from the Shaolin temple. Its true origin is still yet to be proven or verified. There are a few versions of its origin, which seem to be probable but still some facts just don't match or tally. The most talked about is the Buddhist nun, Ng Mui witnessing the battle of the Crane and the Snake....... teaching the Art to Yim Wing Chun ......

Through time, Wing Chun has evolved in many ways, but the "visual" core characteristics are still recognizable. Some are very hard and external, some are soft and "internal" and some are mixed with other Kung Fu styles. Under the influences and backgrounds of different masters, diverse styles of Wing Chun were evolved. Not surprisingly more new variations will materialize as time goes by.

Today one can see many fractions of Wing Chun, like Yip Man Wing Chun (which is one of the post popular style), Kulo, Jee Shim, Chan Wah Shun, Pan Nam, Yuen Kay San, Sum Nung, Ban Chung Cho Gar, Sake and Crane, Mai Gei Wong, Yiu Kai etc. All these variations of Wing Chun although it is believed that they have a common origin and share similar basic principles and concepts, they nevertheless differ in one way or another. The very fact that they are named differently, speak for themselves. Often these differences are significant in a deeper sense. That is why many fractions of Wing Chun often debate which Wing Chun is the authentic one.

As we know, Yip Man Wing Chun is the most popular and most widely disseminated style of Wing Chun. Undoubtedly, Yip Man Wing Chun may seem to "represent" what is Wing Chun like to the martial art world. Wong Shun Leung's the "Science of Infighting" and Leung Ting's teaching had established to profound extend of how Wing Chun should be. Unavoidably variants of Wing Chun will happen after few generations of evolution. Thus, the truth of the true origin and history of what the "originator"of Wing Chun intentions and aspirations, cannot be reflected accurately.

As a Chinese Kung fu, Wing Chun was invariably a "close door" art in the old days, and not taught to just any one, Because of this secrecy tradition, many Chinese Kung Fu simply dissappear, dies out or watered down or passed on with many variations. Just take a look at the so-called"modern" Wing Chun. It is "simplified" until there are not much substance. Of course, there are many 'justifications" to its simplicity, but didn't make sense in the "traditional" principle of Kung Fu foundation.

Yip Man Wing Chun inadvertently owes its global recognition, primarily to Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee taught " Jun Fan Gung Fu", which was based heavily on Wing Chun and later developed "The Way of the Intercepting Fist" or Jeet Kune Do in the late 60s. Today Wing Chun is very widespread globally, even in less developed countries. But yet in China itself, there are some unknown masters who maintain and preserve the old traditions, and not willing to share the knowledge of the art even to their compatriots. Therefore ..... what is Wing Chun?
